How To Sign Up For Medicare
Learn how to sign up for Medicare, when you can apply, when coverage starts, and how to enroll in Part B to get the healthcare benefits you need.
New to Medicare?
Medicare is a program managed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Persons who are age 65 and older, certain younger people with disabilities or persons with ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease – permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant) may be eligible to apply for Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Currently, Medicare has four different parts, Parts A, B, C, and D. They include services, such as hospital, medical, and prescription drugs.
What exactly do these parts mean? Do you need to get them all? There is a certain time that you need to apply for Medicare; after which you may want to sign up for additional coverage through a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plan.

When Can I Apply for Medicare?
You can apply for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, which starts three months before you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after. If you miss this window, you may have to wait for a General Enrollment Period or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
How Old Do You Have to Be for Medicare?
Most people are eligible for Medicare at age 65. However, you may qualify earlier if you have certain disabilities or conditions, such as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS.
When Does Medicare Start?
If you enroll during the first three months of your Initial Enrollment Period, your Medicare coverage will usually begin the first day of your birthday month. Enrolling later in your window may delay your start date.
